TAILGATING TIPS FOR ROSACEA CONTROL

With all the college bowls starting up, men with rosacea struggle to find ways to enjoy the tailgating experience without ending up with an over-indulged appearance.

Favorite ball game and tailgating foods tend to also be the ones that cause the most facial redness – hot wings, beer, chili, spicy dips and salsa. If you are the host the answer can be simple – provide a mild and a spicy version of each, if you have ladies present, some of them may prefer the milder versions.  Or there’s always the time honored excuse – I have a date later and don’t want to reek of garlic and onions.

Prior to the game it’s good to hydrate the body well with water, this will help to reduce and control the facial skin redness. Try to avoid being outside in the direct sun or if indoors watch the game in a cool well ventilated room.

Alternatives to traditional tailgating foods –
Wings in honey or honey mustard as opposed to hot sauce.
Replace your spicy dips with a little ranch dressing or creamed spinach as a dip.
Add a fruit and veggies tray to the ball game fare.
Domestic beer or light beers as opposed to the darker ales will help to keep the redness down.
Clear alcohols as opposed to the darker blended whiskies tend to result in less facial redness.

Be aware that all these foods will still result in some increase in rosacea redness of the skin, the right options in moderation will allow you to minimize the redness and still enjoy the camaraderie of the game.

Exercise Tips for Men With Rosacea

THE SPECIAL NEEDS OF MEN WITH ROSACEA
EXERCISE TIPS

Men with rosacea face several unique challenges to controlling their rosacea while still getting the physical workout the desire. I think we are all aware of the many positive benefits of exercise for keeping fit and relieving stress. If you run of jog try to do so during the cooler hours of the day – early morning and after the sun sets in the evening. Keep a water bottle with you to stay hydrated during your run.
When working out in the gym, balance your routine in 15 minute sets, this gives you the best cardio benefit and to reduce any possible redness, allows you a cooling down period to re-hydrate and pat your face down with a cool damp towel. To keep the pores from becoming clogged, it’s good to cleanse the facial skin prior to exercise and again afterwards.  During exercise it may be helpful to keep a damp towel around the shoulders for easy access to cool the face. When cooling down with the damp cloth be careful to pat the face not rub it. You may wish to have several small towels in a small lunch cooler with an ice pack to keep them chilled.
Another great option is swimming or even just treading water in the pool. This is a wonderful way to relieve stress and relax.

Skin Care for Men With Rosacea

THE SPECIAL NEEDS OF MEN WITH ROSACEA
SKIN CARE

Men with rosacea face several unique challenges to controlling their rosacea. Whereas women are quite comfortable wearing makeup to cover up the signs of their rosacea redness, many men hesitate to apply foundation to their skin. One possible solution to this would be to apply a green cover up lotion. While this will not completely hide or mask the redness, the green tint does tone down the redness. When applying the cover up lotion you want to take care to apply lightly and evenly. These green tint lotions are marketed under several different names, the most commonly found one would be Eucerin’s Anti-Redness lotion and cream. While they make a lot of claims that the product doesn’t always live up to – it is a good quick, “my face is red this morning, how can I tone it down solution”. One thing to be aware of is the ingredient licochalcone in the lotion which the makers claim is a skin soothing extract of licorice root. Licorice root can interfere with other medical conditions or medications you may be taking for other conditions.

It’s always good to check the ingredients on the product labels. Lanolin often found in moisturizers and skin care products is another ingredient that can be irritating to the skin. Anything that professes to be anti-wrinkle or anti-aging will be too harsh and irritating to the skin resulting in increased facial redness.

Many men have trouble with shaving causing irritation. Some men will opt to grow a beard to hide the redness, but this can result in flaky dry patches under the beard called seborrhea dermatitis. Scratching or scrubbing to remove the flaky patches only makes the redness and irritation worse. The solution here if you chose to wear a beard to cover up your redness is to apply a drop or two of 100% pure jojoba oil twice a day to the beard area. Dampen the skin and lightly massage the oil into the beard area.

For those who chose not to grow facial hair to hide their redness, you will find that an electric wet/dry razor for shaving is the least irritating to the skin. One very good wet/dry razor is the Panasonic Wet/Dry Electric Razor. For the least irritating effect you want to shave with the skin wet using a shaving cream for sensitive skin with Dimethicone skin protectant in it. One possible brand to consider would the Noxzema Medicated Shaving Cream for Extra Sensitive Skin with Dimethicone skin protectant.  Some men find that the electric razors do not shave close enough to suit their facial hair growth, if this is the case, a disposable razor for sensitive skin and replace the blades or razors every two to three days still using the same shaving cream with Dimethicone. A lot of men and women have found that when they can’t locate any other cleanser or soap to cleanse their skin without causing it further redness and irritation that the shaving  cream with dimethicone is the answer.

Addressing the redness from the inside will also be beneficial. Increasing your water intake will help to hydrate the skin, lessening the effects of irritation and redness. Spicy hot wings are great but you may pay the price with a redder complexion. So if you combine the internal tips to reduce redness with the external tips for redness reduction, you will gradually find the right balance that controls you redness without compromising your lifestyle.

Rosacea Reduction Massage

Facial massage techniques can be implemented as an effective addition to your current rosacea treatment. Facial massage can calm the facial muscles allowing the heated, reddened skin an opportunity to relax and resume normal blood flow  resulting in a decrease in rosacea skin redness. Rotational massage of the facial features can stimulate the skin and encourage cell growth and rejuvenation. The use of a wash cloth when cleansing the skin will produce the effect of stimulating  the skin and aid in the removal of dead skin cells and surface debris.
