Rosacea Types: Perioral Dermatitis

Often people with rosacea or acne will have episodes of inflammation, bumps, peeling or generals breakouts which are centralized around the mouth, below the nose and chin areas. Thinking this is part of their rosacea or acne, they tend to treat it as such and often times, this does not help. In fact it seems to make it worse. Known in medical terms as Perioral dermatitis.  This condition generally consists of small red bumps or even pus bumps and mild peeling. The ingredients in many dental products such as mouthwash, tartar-control or fluoridated toothpaste seems to worsen the condition.

Many cosmetics contains ingredients that have been shown to worsen the perioral dermatitis symptoms. Some of these include emolients in lipstick or lip gloss, producst used to treat chapped or dry lips, skin moisturizers and even some medications perscribed to treat asthma or nasal congestion or allergies. Daily use of these products may not cause a problem until some trigger such as stress, hormones or dehydration lowers the immune system response which acts like a switch turning on the skin responses of bumps, swelling, redness and peeling of the skin.
